Statutory Medical Examiners Service - Go Live Date 9th September

The statutory implementation of the Medical Examiner Service GP practices 9th September (under legislation in the 2022 Health and Care Act).

The medical examiner service has been successfully running in our acute trusts and the rollout to primary care completes the final stages of the nationwide process. A medical examiner will review the clinical notes to agree the cause of death with you or suggest a referral to the coroner. As part of the process the medical examiner will speak to the bereaved and talk through any questions they have.

The change means that from 9th September 2024 all non-coronial deaths (non-acute sector) need to be referred to the local medical examiner’s office before a death certificate can be provided.

Is the practice ready for change?

Do not leave this until your first referral.

Have you got the new MCCD booklet?

Use the link below to ensure your practice is on the distribution list for the new Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) booklets - it’s important to note that DHSC are taking over the responsibility for the distribution of MCCD booklets in future from the registry office.

The attached update power point includes an example of the CN1A which replaces Form 100A.
